Maybe this time its Cornelia who could use it? She keeps things straight. The ending is subtle, finishing with a quiet continuation of life rather than a sudden climax and resolution, and yet it is so appropriate it still leaves the reader satisfied.

She cooks vegetable soup so Lenore will eat something other than Ring Dings; she lures her out of bed with strong coffee and waffles. And some regard you as dimwit, including those who continue to put you into the same English classes even though you have already read the books--in their original language and format--that are being covered in the room.

Grandma Dowdel and Agatha Thornhill are birds of a feather, scruffy old hags with hearts of gold. Cornelia lifts her head and argues with him.

I just hope that Ms. She wears a giant purple hat and moccasins, no matter what the season. Her mother is completely irresponsible. Make sure Tending to Grace is on your calendar. Like Katherine Paterson's classic The Great Gilly Hopkins and many other stories of the rejected kid who finds a family with a rough solitary older adult, this quiet, beautiful first novel makes the search for home a searing drama.

I'm an avid reader and I don't think there's more than two books I've ever re-read.

Her mother is completely irresponsible. You speak up, then you can be who was meant to be. Cornelia stuffs her feelings of hurt inside and refuses to speak most of the time, because of her stutter.

But no one knows how smart she is, because she's ashamed of her stammering and barely speaks. They're really wonderful people. I am going to miss these characters It is like no other book I've read before.

You speak up, then you can be who was meant to be. Aunt Agatha sure doesnt want any fixing. She struggles to speak, but is an avid reader. Please read it if you're looking for a treasure.

Fusco's writing is so expressive, from the beginning, comparing Cornelia's life to a clothesline, through to the end, as both Cornelia and Agatha learn things about the other. She avoids eye contact with others, stutters badly, is presumed to be slow at school, and likens herself to a stone, hard and strong way down inside.
