I admit that Cody is an engaging character, but her motivations are too poorly handled for me to take her seriously. They were provided a police escort to the airport from the city's bus facilities. I got no sense of her personality or why her friendship with Cody was so important.
There are some books that take pages, chapters even to get you hooked. The emotional journey of Cody was just as compelling if not more so than finding out why Meg would end her life.
There were two things I thought were done excellently in this book and neither of them were the romance. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington.

The press in white communities condemned the direct action approach that CORE was taking, while some of the national press negatively portrayed the Riders as provoking unrest.I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.
